Understanding HDPE Pressure Ratings: PN6 to PN16 Explained
May 2, 2026 TEC Engineering Team
When specifying HDPE pipes for a project, the "PN" rating is the most critical factor. PN stands for "Pressure Nominal" and indicates the maximum operating pressure the pipe can sustain at 20°C.
PN6 (6 Bar / ~87 PSI) Typically used for low-pressure applications such as gravity mains, agricultural irrigation, and low-pressure drainage.
PN10 (10 Bar / ~145 PSI) The standard for municipal water distribution networks and general industrial fluid transport.
PN16 (16 Bar / ~232 PSI) Required for high-pressure systems, pumping mains, and deep underground installations where external load pressures are significant.
Why Wall Thickness Matters The PN rating is directly tied to the SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) of the pipe. A lower SDR means a thicker wall, which translates to a higher PN rating. At TEC INDUSTRIES, we manufacture HDPE pipes across all pressure classes, ensuring you have the exact specification required for your project.
